what were some of the first foods you fed your kids?

All of mine are exclusively breastfed at least until they have teeth or an interest in food, which is about 7 to 8 months, and breastmilk remains the biggest single food in their diet for quite some time after that as well.

Then our first food is almost always mushy bananas. other early foods include oatmeal, sweet potatoes, mushy tomatoes, ricotta cheese, crackers.

here’s where vegetarians should not read… we let then have bbq rib bones and chicken/turkey drumsticks pretty early too, like little wee doggies. Minced chicken or beefy pasta sauce is a favorite too.

and whatever they can handle off an adult plate like pastas, whole wheat bread, potatoes, well-cooked or soft veggies, ripe soft fruits etc.

Editing to add more after Bede’s gone down for a nap.

If they want to try it I pretty much let them. I worry about choking enough that I cut all round windpipe-shaped foods (banana, unless it’s VERY ripe, grapes, cherries, etc) in half or quarters (probably for much longer than I really need to) but other than that I don’t really limit what they eat. We’re not huge consumers of the Cheerio (I think they’re too salty for a little person to eat much of) but they get a few. And soft cubed cheeses like mozzarella yum!

I start supplemental liquids around the time I start non breast foods too, usually water, dilute fruit juice, and later towards the year mark, whole goat’s or even cow’s milk.

I guess I could have summed all this up with “feed baby pretty much anything”. Heh.

Woke up to the normal sounds this morning: the three year old babbling in the corner of the bedroom with her toys, the 22 month old bumping me with his head in the small of my back and the four year old complaining of thirst. Then the 3 month old stirred and started to nurse. It was quiet for a minute. Really quiet, no human noise at all. As we live about 50-75 feet from two major streets, this was unusual. I dragged my tired self to the window to see…

a world is covered in ice! A good half-inch, I’d say. Hence no cars on the streets. Wild! Looks like glass. If I had the gumption to get out and take some pictures I would, but you can go look at bionicsquirrel instead.

Pretty.
